When Is Ted Cruz Up for Reelection in the Senate?

Search traffic for when Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) will be up for reelection to the Senate spiked following his trip to Cancun during the current crisis in his home state. He is next up for reelection in 2024.

Photos of the prominent Republican heading to Mexico with his family went viral amid the ongoing problems posed by the winter storm in Texas. Cruz did not immediately confirm whether it was him traveling despite the mounting backlash during his silence.

Cruz later released a statement confirming he had gone to Cancun, stating he traveled after his daughters asked to go on a trip with friends and he wanted "to be a good dad," before returning to Texas on Thursday.

Explaining his trip, Cruz said: "With school canceled for the week, our girls asked to take a trip with friends. Wanting to be a good dad, I flew down with them last night and am flying back this afternoon.

"My staff and I are in constant communication with state and local leaders to get to the bottom of what happened in Texas.

"We want our power back, our water on, and our homes warm. My team and I will continue using all our resources to keep Texans informed and safe."

He has faced calls to resign following this situation, and protesters confronted Cruz when he arrived back in Texas.

Cruz later said the trip was "obviously a mistake," the Associated Press reported, adding: "In hindsight, I wouldn't have done it."

In the aftermath, Google Trends showed an increase in people asking when Cruz will be up for reelection. His Senate seat will be up on November 5, 2024. Cruz last won it in 2018, narrowly defeating the Democratic candidate Beto O'Rourke.

O'Rourke was among those who first questioned Cruz's trip when rumors swirled.

While Cruz's Senate seat will be contested in 2024, he is also among names mentioned in discussions about potential presidential runners—though he has not been a frontrunner in polls. Cruz ran unsuccessfully for the Republican nomination in 2016.

The backlash over the Cancun trip comes with Cruz already facing calls to resign in the wake of the Capitol riot after he questioned the integrity of the 2020 election.

Cruz condemned the storming of the Capitol but defended his stance on the election. Critics said his words and actions helped provoke the situation, which Cruz has denies.

As well as calls for his resignation, others have suggested that he be censured in the Senate.

Newsweek has contacted Cruz's office for comment.
