While other men hold him steady, a Hindu devotee gets his cheek pierced during a firewalk festival in the north-central township of Yankin on April 19. The celebration also saw worshippers walking over hot coals. Hindus in several countries observe body piercing—typically with steel rods but sometimes hooks or other instruments—to honor the gods and to demonstrate endurance and willpower.
