Kim Kardashian Files for Divorce From Kanye West

Kim Kardashian has filed for divorce from Kanye West, a representative for Kardashian confirmed to Newsweek.

According to the New York Daily News, Kardashian filed for divorce on Friday with divorce lawyer Laura Wasser.

Rumors that the couple were discussing divorce have been circulating since at least January. CNN reported on January 6 that sources close to the couple said the pair had been to marriage counseling and spoken about the possibility of separating.

The My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy rapper and Keeping Up with the Kardashians star have been married since May 2014, and they first started dating back in 2012. Together the pair have four children: North (born June 2013), Saint (born December 2015), Chicago (born January 2018) and Psalm (born May 2019).

News of the impending divorce comes after a particularly trying year for the couple. During West's controversial 2020 presidential run, it did not appear that Kardashian had ever given the rapper a formal endorsement. After fans had expressed concern for West's mental health in July, following his announcement that he would be seeking the presidency, Kardashian posted a series of statements on Instagram about the difficulties that West faces as someone diagnosed as bi-polar.

"We as a society talk about giving grace to the issue of mental health as a whole, however we should also give it to the individuals who are living with it in the times when they need it the most," she wrote on the platform.

Kardashian tweeted that, for her 40th birthday celebration in October, West paid for a hologram message modeled after her late father, Robert Kardashian. The projection of the lawyer told her that he was proud of her accomplishments. The Kardashian hologram also complimented West, calling him the "most genius man in the whole world."

While they were together, the two collaborated on some of West's musical projects. Kardashian appeared in the 2013 music video for the Yeezus single "Bound 2," and she was also featured in his 2019 video for "Closed on Sunday," from his gospel-rap album Jesus is King.

In 2019, Kardashian announced plans to pursue a law degree, following in her father's footsteps. Aside from her pursuits in higher education, Kardashian is also busy with the 20th and final season of Keeping Up With the Kardashians coming up; it's scheduled to premiere in March.

It's not clear what exactly West has coming down the pipeline. He's been mostly quiet on social media following his presidential run, save for his Sunday Service Choir releasing a surprise EP titled Emmanuel on Christmas Day. In July 2020, he was expected to release his ninth studio album, Donda, named for his late mother, but the album has yet to see the light of day.
