'Octopath Traveler' Character Guide: H'aanit the Hunter

H'aanit is one of the eight characters whom you can choose to play when starting Octopath Traveler. A patient 24-year-old hunter, H'aanit lives in the Woodlands with her people in the village of Swarkii.

Her biography states:

"Your name is H'aanit, and you are a Hunter.

"One of the last descendants of an ancient clan that calls the deep forest home, your prowess with the bow is unmatched.

"Your master left home one year ago, summoned to hunt a dread beast, and you protected the village while awaiting his return.

"Then, one day, the return of an old friend gives her cause you concern, and you strike out on a journey of your own."

In H'aanit's meeting story, we learn that H'aanit's laidback mentor Z'aanta has left the village over a year ago to pursue a difficult beast called Redeye. She was made village guardian until her mentor's return, but decides to leave the village in search of him.

H'aanit is able to wield two different weapons in battle and also has access to lightning magic. While she is a damage dealer in the vein of Olberic the Warrior, her pets require a little more management on the player's part. She is not the best starting character choice for those new to J-RPGs, as her bow and axe attacks combined with her hunter skills and beast summons can be overwhelming at first. Her best choice for first skill is either Arrowstorm or Rain of Arrows in order to help her take down multiple enemies at once.

H'aanit's path action is Provoke, which allows her to use beasts to provoke people into battle. Like Olberic's Challenge path action, this can be used to grind outside of combat zones and dungeons.

H'aanit's talent is Capture, which enables her to capture creatures in battle and train them to fight by her side. This is important because she can not only Break enemies by taking advantage of many more weaknesses than other characters, she can also heal herself using the mossy meep summon.

H'aanit's primary job is Hunter. Hunters can equip both axes and bows and have the following bonuses:

  • Physical Attack +8 percent
  • Accuracy +6 percent
  • Critical +6 percent
  • Speed +5 percent
  • Evasion +5 percent

Hunter skills are:

  • Rain of Arrows (8 SP): Attack random foes five to eight times with a bow.
  • True Strike (10 SP): Deal critical damage with a bow to a single foe.
  • Thunderbird (7 SP): Deal heavy lightning damage to a single foe.
  • Leghold Trap (6 SP): Cause a single foe to act at the end of the turn for two turns.
  • Mercy Strike (4 SP): Attack a single foe with a bow. Otherwise lethal attacks will instead leave the target with 1 HP.
  • Arrowstorm (24 SP): Attack all foes five to eight times with a bow.
  • Take Aim (8 SP): Increase all allies' critical rate and accuracy for two turns.
  • Draefendi's Rage (30 SP, Divine Skill): Unleash a highly powerful bow attack on all foes.

Hunter support skills are:

  • Heighten Senses: Gain an increased chance of attacking first in battle. (Equipping this skill with multiple characters will have no added effect.)
  • Eagle Eye: Increases the equipping character's critical rate by 50.
  • Second Serving: Gives the equipping character a 50 percent chance of attacking twice when performing a standard attack.
  • Patience: The equipping character will gain a 25 percent chance of acting again at the end of a turn.
