'Octopath Traveler' Character Guide: Alfyn the Apothecary

Alfyn Greengrass is one of the eight characters whom you can choose to play as when starting Octopath Traveler. A 21-year-old apothecary with a dream, Alfyn resides in the country town of Clearbrook.

His biography states:

"Your name is Alfyn, and you are an apothecary.

"You treat the wounded and sick in a small village amid the babbling brooks of the Riverlands.

Stricken ill as a child, you were saved by a traveler who asked for nothing in return, inspiring you to follow in his footsteps.

"Though hesitant to leave the only home you've known, your best friend convinces you to follow your dream, wherever it may lead you…"

In his opening story, Alfyn must battle a beast to save his childhood best friend Zeph's little sister, who has been bitten by a deadly viper.

Alfyn is a healer character, which means you will have an easier go of it in the early game if you choose him. He starts with First Aid, a skill that drains SP in order to heal, which saves you money on healing items. You can also heal characters in the pause menu using First Aid, which comes in handy during Octopath Traveler's many dungeons.

Alfyn's path action is Inquire, which allows him to ask townspeople questions. This allows Alfyn to move quests forward using the information he's gained, some of which people may not want you to know. You can find this information in the Knowledge section of the inventory. Inquire works the same as Cyrus' Scrutinize path action.

Alfyn's talent is Concoct, which lets him create potions from ingredients in your inventory to help your allies or hurt your enemies. However, in order to know what one of Alfyn's concoctions will do, you have to make it first.

Alfyn's primary job is Apothecary. Apothecaries use ingredients to support their party members in battle and feature ice elemental damage as well. They can equip axes and have the following bonuses:

  • Max HP +20 percent
  • Physical Attack +1.5 percent
  • Physical Defense +1.5 percent
  • Critical +1.5 percent
  • Elemental Attack +1.5 percent

Apothecary skills are:

  • First Aid: (4 SP) Restore HP to a single ally.
  • Icicle: (7 SP) Deal ice damage to a single foe.
  • Rehabilitate: (10 SP) Cure a single ally of all status ailments, and render them immune to further ailments for two turns.
  • Amputation: (8 SP) Unleash an axe attach on a single foe.
  • Empoison: (6 SP) Poison a single foe for two turns.
  • Vivify: (16 SP) Revive a single incapacitated ally.
  • Last Stand: (16 SP) Attack all foes with an axe, dealing damage inversely proportional to your current HP.
  • Dohter's Charity: (30 SP) [Divine Skill] For three turns, items used by a single chosen ally will affect all.

Apothecary support skills are:

  • Inspiration: (4 skills) With each successful standard attack, gain SP equal to one percent of the damage you deal.
  • Hale and Hearty: (5 skills) Increases maximum HP by 500.
  • Resist Ailments: (6 skills) Improves resistance to poison, sleep, confusion, blindness, silence, terror and unconsciousness.
  • Heightened Healing: (7 skills) Gain an additional 30% or SP when being healed or restored.
