'Octopath Traveler' Character Guide: Cyrus the Scholar

Cyrus Albright is one of the eight characters whom you can choose to play as when starting Octopath Traveler. A 30-year-old scholar with a dream, Cyrus resides in the town of Atlasdam.

His biography states:

"Your name is Cyrus, and you are a scholar.

"You teach at the Royal Academy in Atlasdam, and though you have numerous admirers, your only true passion is the pursuit of knowledge.

"'There is so much more I would learn!'

"One day you realize that an invaluable tome has vanished from the Royal Library piquing your insatiable curiosity…"

Cyrus is a classic mage type of character with both fire and ice spells to start. The key to maximizing a mage's damage is building up Boost in order to unleash a fully boosted spell, which means you'll be doing much more damage but only paying the base SP cost.

Cyrus's skill allows him to identify enemy weak points at the start of combat, which makes the considerable Octopath Traveler grind that much easier. However, you'll have to be careful with this glass cannon and not let him take too much damage.

Cyrus's path action is Scrutinize, which allows him to ask townspeople questions, albeit in a more aggressive fashion than Alfyn's Inquire. Similar to Alfyn's Inquire path action, Scrutinize allows Cyrus to move quests forward using the information he's gained, some of which people may not want you to know. You can find this information in the Knowledge section of the inventory.

Cyrus's talent is Study Foe, which enables him to automatically know an enemy's weakness in battle. When you're starting out and still getting used to the combat system and how Breaking an enemy works, his talent comes in very handy indeed.

Cyrus's primary job is Scholar. A classic mage-type job, scholars deal elemental damage to their enemies and equip staves. Scholars have the following bonuses:

  • Max SP +13 percent
  • Elemental Attack +10 percent
  • Elemental Defense +5

Scholar skills are:

  • Fireball (8 SP): Deal fire damage to all foes.
  • Icewind (8 SP): Deal ice damage to all foes.
  • Lightning Bolt (8 SP): Deal lightning damage to all foes.
  • Analyze (1 SP): Reveal HP and one weakness of a single foe [reveals additional weaknesses with Boost Points].
  • Fire Storm (22 SP): Deal fire damage to all foes twice.
  • Blizzard (22 SP): Deal ice damage to all foes twice.
  • Lightning Blast (22 SP): Deal lightning damage to all foes twice.
  • Alephan's Enlightenment (30 SP, Divine Skill): For three turns, spells case by a single chosen ally that usually target all foes will instead be focused on a single foe at increased intensity.

Scholar support skills are:

  • Evasive Maneuvers: Encounter fewer random battles in the world. (Equipping this skill with multiple characters will have no added effect.)
  • Elemental Augmentation: Augments the equipping character's elemental attack strength by 50.
  • Percipience: Prevents the party from being surprised by foes. (Equipping this skill with multiple characters will have no added effect.)
  • Vim and Vigor: The equipping character will regenerate HP each turn.
