'Octopath Traveler' Character Guide: Tressa the Merchant

Tressa Colzione is one of the eight characters whom you can choose to play as when starting Octopath Traveler. An 18-year-old merchant with a dream, Tressa resides in the coastal town of Rippletide.

Her biography states:

"Your name is Tressa, and you are a merchant.

"You stock the shelves at your parents' shop in your sleepy, seaside hometown.

"Yet you often find yourself gazing out at sea, longing for something more.

"'What lies beyond the horizon?'

"You thought you'd never know the answer.

"Then, one day, an unfamiliar vessels weighs anchor at the docks, changing your life forever…"

Tressa's meeting story sees her town raided by thieving pirates. The proud merchant girl refuses to let the pirates get away with their robbery and comes up with a clever plan that requires her to enter the pirates' den. She receives help from an unexpected source who sets the spark of her dreams aflame, inspiring her to explore the wider world she has imagined so many times.

Tressa comes equipped with wind magic and a slew of items suitable for any store's shelves. If you're something of a penny pincher, use Tressa to stop at every NPC and see whether they're selling a cheaper version of something at the item shop. They may even have items not available at the local item shop.

Tressa has early access to the Rest ability, which lets you heal yourself for no SP. While you can't use it out of combat, Rest allows you to restore your own HP and SP as well as cure status ailments. It kind of makes you an unbeatable, unstoppable Terminator. Nice!

Tressa's path action is Purchase, which allows her to buy items from townspeople. This can be used to move quests forward or access items that are otherwise inaccessible. Purchase works the same as the Steal path action, though of course, it costs money.

Tressa's talent is Eye for Money, which enables her to gain more money from engaging in successful combat. If you're a fan of the grind, bring Tressa along to fund your adventure.

Tressa's primary job is Merchant. Merchants can equip both bows and polearms and have the following bonuses:

  • Max HP +8 percent
  • Physical Attack +3 percent
  • Physical Defense +3 percent
  • Max SP +8 percent
  • Elemental Attack +3 percent
  • Elemental Defense +3 percent

Merchant skills are:

  • Collect (2 SP): Collect money from a single foe.
  • Tradewinds (7 SP): Deal heavy wind damage to a single foe.
  • Rest (0 SP): Restore one's own HP and SP, and cure status ailments.
  • Trade Tempest (10 SP): Deal wind damage to all foes.
  • Donate BP (3 SP): Grant 1 BP to an ally.
  • Sidestep (10 SP): Dodge a single physical attack with a 100 percent success rate.
  • Hired Help (0 SP): Pay money to summon hired help to the battlefield.
  • Bifelgan's Bounty (30 SP, Divine Skill): Unleash a non-elemental attack on a single foe and receive money equivalent to the damage dealt.

Merchant support skills are:

  • Endless Items: When a character with this skill uses an item, there is a 25 percent chance the item will not be consumed.
  • Grows on Trees: Gain additional money after battles. (Equipping this skill with multiple characters will have no added effect.)
  • Hang Tough: When the user is not near death, all attacks that would reduce the user's HP below zero will instead leave the user with 1 HP.
  • SP Saver: Halves SP consumption for the equipping character.
