Hello, I'm Megan Cartwright. Welcome to Newsweek's Bulletin. Here's what you need to know today. Democrats are hoping to erase Republicans' narrow majority in the House of Representatives in the 2026 midterm elections on Tuesday, when all 435 House races are up for grabs. Republicans currently hold 218 House seats to Democrats 214, with one independent and two vacancies. So Democrats only need to flip a few seats to un-control of the chamber. Democrats enter Election Day optimistic about their chances of flipping control of the House, as the party outside of the White House historically has picked up seats in the midterms when the President is unpopular. Democrats begin Election Day on Tuesday favored to capture the Senate, but several races central to their path remain within the range of polling margins of error. Silver Bulletin gave Democrats an 81.5% chance of control at 2pm Eastern on Monday, with an average projection of 53 Democratic seats to 47 Republican seats. Vote helped place their probability at 68%, while decision desk HQ gave them a 65% chance and projected a 52-48 chamber. Democrats need to net gain of four seats for outright control, because Vice President J.D. Vance can break a 50/50 tie in favor of Republicans. In the final hours before Election Day, the Supreme Court denied an appeal from the Trump administration for 20,000 mail-in ballots to be set aside in California over possible non-citizen voting. In the emergency appeal, earlier in the day, the Department of Justice had urged the justices to intervene immediately after an appeals court rejected efforts to sideline the ballots belonging to people the federal government says could be non-citizens. Just before 6pm Eastern, the appeal for an injunction was denied in a short order from the court. That's all for now. See you next time.
