America's Best Nursing Homes 2022

Selecting the right nursing home for a family member has always been difficult and never more so than during the age of COVID-19. To try to make it easier, Newsweek has once again partnered with respected global data research firm Statista to create an annual ranking of America's Best Nursing Homes.

This year's ranking identifies the nation's top nursing homes based on three critical criteria: overall performance data, peer recommendations and each facility's handling of COVID-19, relative to in-state competition. Nursing homes in the 25 states with the highest population size, according to the United States Census Bureau were included in the study.

This year our ranking lists the 450 top facilities across 25 states. If you need to choose a place for a loved one, we hope this list of Best Nursing Homes will help make that decision easier and the burden, lighter.

Methodology
America's Best Nursing Homes 2022 highlights the nation's top 450 nursing homes out of 11,849 analyzed. The rankings are based on performance data, peer recommendations and handling COVID-19, relative to in-state competition. Nursing homes in the 25 states with the highest population size, according to The United States Census Bureau (2020) were included in the study.

Statista used Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services data to determine the performance of nursing homes. For peer recommendations, Statista invited over 10,000 medical experts (registered nurses, nursing home managers and administrators, licensed practical nurses / licensed vocational nurses, nursing assistants, therapists and physicians) to an online survey. Additionally, experts from all over the US could participate in the survey of the Best Nursing Homes by State on newsweek.com. Email verification was required and self-recommendation was not possible.

The survey data was collected from July to August 2021. Statista and Newsweek calculated a COVID-19 score for each facility, using CMS and other official data, to identify nursing homes which have had the best possible response and protocols during the pandemic. The overall rating is the weighted average of the performance data score, the reputation score and the COVID-19 score. Each score is weighted with 1/3. The best 450 nursing homes are awarded with a rank in their own state, resulting in 25 individual lists. The information provided in this ranking should be considered together with other information about nursing homes or, if possible, accompanied by a visit to a facility. The quality of nursing homes that are not included in the list is not disputed.
