Over the last two decades, the industry demand for well-trained cybersecurity professionals has grown exponentially. As an institution with a long-standing tradition of industry engagement through internships, industry-experienced faculty, and relevant academic programming to address emerging industry needs, Johnson & Wales University (JWU) is well-positioned to offer world-class cyber programming that prepares students for rewarding careers.
In 2015, the JWU Cybersecurity Center was launched at the university's College of Engineering & Design with the intent of providing an encouraging, innovative, and welcoming center for multidisciplinary learning and research. The center strives to become a national leader in cyber defense education, prioritizing the integration of cybersecurity education, research, and community engagement.
Today, JWU offers undergraduate and graduate online and in-person cyber degree programs.Undergraduate degrees include Cyber Threat Intelligence & Defense and Computer Science. In addition, the university also offers graduate degrees in Cybersecurity, Information Technology, Instructional Design & Technology and Information Security/Assurance.
In 2022, the university was named as a National Center of Academic Excellence (CAE) in Cyber Defense, a prestigious federal designation that marks JWU as a leader in cyber education. The five-year designation, awarded by the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security (NSA/DHS), requires high standards of excellence and a rigorous application process.
The NSA and DHS jointly sponsor the National Centers of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education (CAE-CDE) and Cybersecurity Research (CAE-R) programs. The goal of these programs is to reduce vulnerability in our national information infrastructure by promoting higher education and research in Cybersecurity and producing a growing number of professionals with Cybersecurity expertise in various disciplines.

"This designation shows to the wider community what we already know to be true: Johnson & Wales provides a world-class education in cybersecurity and defense," says Frank Tweedie, Ed.D., the dean of the College of Engineering & Design. "Our students will be the next generation of professionals on the front lines of our nation's security."
The university's state-of-the-art Cybersecurity Center is located in the heart of downtown Providence, Rhode Island, providing the Rhode Island community, including law enforcement, access to various cybersecurity-related services. The Center provides a safe, secure place for professionals and businesses to perform research, test and build applications.
Johnson & Wales prides itself on recruiting faculty with real-world industry experience and impressive credentials. Prior to joining Johnson & Wales as an assistant professor, Anthony Chavis served in the U.S. Army (Military Intelligence) and was a private contractor working for various companies and U.S. government agencies in the field of Signal Intelligence, Cyber Security, and Network Engineering.
Assistant Professor Chavis is proud of the center's student outcomes. "We are thrilled to see the success of our graduates," says Chavis. "Former students are getting excellent jobs at organizations like Mitre, Hasbro, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), General Dynamics, and Citizens Bank. It is not uncommon for students to receive job offers months prior to graduation."
Associate Professor Doug Tondreau, who previously served as a Lead Information Technologist for the Department of Digital Forensics and Cybersecurity at a state university, manages the center's partnerships with local law enforcement while serving as the center's director. "Our relationships with local law enforcement have allowed us to partner in creating a safer State of Rhode Island," says Tondreau. JWU is currently partnering with the Providence Police Department and the Rhode Island State Police.
By building a strong foundation through academics and hands-on experience in the field, Johnson & Wales University aims to create the next generation of cyber-professionals that help protect individual freedom, strengthen our nation's defense, and share their knowledge with the world. Students grow not only as scholars but as professionals and citizens.
