In conversation with Newsweek, Pablo Brizi, executive vice president and chief human resources officer at Hilton Grand Vacations, answered the following questions:
1. Can you provide an overview of your company's workplace culture and values, and how they contribute to a positive work environment?
At HGV, we live by a simple mission: "Putting People First." By keeping this perspective as the cornerstone of our decisions, we can provide members and guests with vacations of a lifetime while also prioritizing ways to drive change, create and enhance responsible business practices and cultivate an inclusive culture throughout our company.
As a leader in the timeshare industry, we take our responsibility to make positive impacts on our members and team members seriously. We're committed to creating a culture of inclusion and belonging where our team members have a voice, feel valued and can thrive both individually and collectively. We believe that when we bring together individuals with different perspectives and experiences, it allows us to build a stronger, more successful organization. We pride ourselves on providing our members and guests with unparalleled levels of service and unforgettable vacation experiences, all while ensuring the utmost transparency in our practices. It is a natural extension of our "People-First" mission to be good stewards of the communities where we live, work and vacation.
2. How does your company promote diversity and inclusion within the workplace? Are there any specific initiatives or programs in place?
At HGV, we value all aspects of diversity and celebrate the unique experiences of every team member. We believe that leading with inclusion drives opportunity for all. By instituting inclusive practices and policies across the organization, we strive to foster an environment of respect and an inherent sense of belonging for every team member regardless of race, background or personal beliefs.
An important component of our inclusive culture is our voluntary, employee-led Team Member Resource Groups (TMRGs). Our commitment to these groups is reflected by the 22 senior executives who donate their time and resources to ensure our 31 TMRG co-chairs receive the necessary guidance to ensure the success of each group. Our TMRG Leaders create impactful experiences that educate, increase a sense of pride and enhance cultural competencies within HGV.
Today, we have 12 TMRGs for the following unique communities: B.E.A.T (African American), Asian-Pacific Islander, Hispanic Latino, Pride, Military & Families, Women, Diverse Abilities, Sustainability, Mosaic (Multi-Cultural), Parenting & Caregivers (PaCT), Young Professionals and Wisdom.
It is our hope these efforts create limitless possibilities where people can thrive, enjoy and feel fulfilled.
3. Are there any professional development and growth opportunities available to employees? How does your company support career advancement?
Continuous learning opportunities allow our team members to take ownership of their careers. HGV's global learning & development program is centered around offering professional development opportunities to our team members.
Through this flagship tool, U First, team members have access to more than 1,400 online learning courses that foster their career growth. Below are a few examples of the courses completed by team members in 2022:
• 165,000+ completed courses on safety and legal compliance
• 5,550+ completed courses on professional development
• 2,200+ completed courses on leadership
• 2,000+ completed courses on service training
In addition, HGV utilizes a survey-based tool to help team members understand their personal behavior and thinking preferences so they can learn how to improve their communications and interactions with others. In 2022, more than 700 team members took the assessment and created a profile.
HGV recently launched a new intern professional development series. Through this initiative, we welcomed approximately 30 interns and created weekly opportunities centered around core HGV values. Each experience included a senior leader sharing how they bring one of our HGV values to life and incorporated a development opportunity, which included training and education on specific topics applicable to each intern's career interest.
4. What measures does your company take to support employee mental health and well-being?
People are at the heart of everything we do, and our entire organization revolves around incredible team members who drive our success. Led by our core values, HGV has built a culture that cherishes team members and their well-being.
At HGV, our greatest strength is our people, and our comprehensive rewards program reflects our commitment to team members. With a focus on benefits, compensation and the overall work-life experience, HGV reinforces its people-first culture through wellness programs and comprehensive benefits that support the individual needs of its team members.
Approximately 71% of team members are enrolled in our health and well-being programs. We offer a suite of benefit and wellness programs to support the diverse needs of our team members, including but not limited to, medical, dental, vision, an Employee Stock Purchase Plan, 401(k), Employee Assistance Program, tuition reimbursement, spending accounts, life and disability insurance, an Active&Fit Direct program where team members can enroll for a lower membership fee and get access to a national network of fitness centers, discount programs and a variety of voluntary benefits.
5. How does your company ensure transparency and open communication between management and employees, fostering a sense of trust and belonging?
Through monthly pulse checks as well as an annual engagement survey, HGV regularly solicits feedback from team members. Responses received via these methods allow leadership to remain nimble, making necessary changes throughout the organization in an effort to ensure a fulfilling career experience for team members, ripe with opportunity.
In 2022, we administered a global engagement survey to all HGV resorts, call centers, sales centers and corporate locations, allowing us to better understand the team member experience. Findings from the survey indicated that HGV's team member satisfaction score on the Hospitality Index was above average amongst our hospitality peers. The survey administered by Qualtrics, a leader in the experience management space, is our number one tool to identify emerging trends and help cultivate two-way communication between team members and senior leadership.
6. How does your company celebrate and recognize employee achievements and milestones?
Recognition is an important component of HGV's culture that creates a rewarding experience for team members. Our SPARK recognition program is an online platform that allows colleagues to easily spotlight others who go above and beyond. The platform is also used to celebrate work anniversaries and birthdays. For example, team members who have been with the company for 10 years or more are awarded a complimentary three-day/two-night stay certificate at an HGV resort of their choosing. Team members who have also been with the company for 10 years receive Go Hilton's Friends & Family travel rates for life, and at 20 years, receive Team Member travel rates for life.
The SPARK recognition program launched in July 2022, and more than 55,000 SPARK recognitions were sent by the end of the year.
• More than 7,500 of those recognitions included monetary value in the form of points.
• The additional 45,000+ recognitions were in the form of social appreciation.
Champions Club is one of HGV's largest team member award programs, which recognizes the company's top performers who consistently deliver outstanding results. Last year, the company recognized nearly 250 Champions Club Award winners who were honored during a celebratory event in Orlando.
7. How do you recognize employees and ensure they are compensated fairly as they grow with your company?
At HGV, people are at the center of everything we do.
Our people-first talent strategy is inclusive of initiatives and activities that ensure our team members feel valued and rewarded for their contributions. Champions Club, for example, celebrates the top-performers with an annual awards gala to recognize exceptional performance during the year. Personal achievements are also recognized internally, inviting team members to send recognition in a special way. Annual compensation planning is also an important component of HGV's Total Rewards program and is an opportunity to reinforce our commitment to fairly and appropriately rewarding team members for their performance and contributions to HGV.
HGV also provides multiple opportunities for team members to focus on their growth and career development. This includes its flagship tool, U First, where team members have access to more than 1,400 online learning courses that foster their career growth. HGV is also grounded in its 4C Framework: Culture, Career, Community and Commerce.
• Culture: Prioritize "Putting People First" to improve team member experiences.
• Career: Activate movement between roles and prepare the next generation of leaders.
• Community: Invest in the communities where we live, work and vacation.
• Commerce: Increase consumer insights from all backgrounds, cultures and experiences.
8. How does your company encourage and support employee engagement and empowerment?
We believe in fostering an environment where our team members can learn, grow and follow their dreams to reach their full potential. We know that when our team members feel supported and valued, their passion and motivation skyrockets. Together, we can achieve extraordinary accomplishments.
HGV has multiple resources, avenues and programs available to help nurture team members career path and ways to discover numerous and diverse perspectives. For example, the Grand Impact Committees at our resorts, encourages team members to post celebrations and share how their properties give back to the community. HGV's 12 Team Member Resource Groups (TMRGs) also contribute to various charitable and educational efforts throughout their communities. These empowered groups further foster the openness, integrity and respect we strive for as a company while sustaining an environment of continual learning through their commitment to work in service of their communities.
Through the company's CSR platform, HGV Serves, team members give their time, talent and resources to participate in volunteer events with non-profit partners to help communities across our footprint thrive for generations to come. In honor of HGV's milestone of 30 years in business, we hosted 30 volunteer and philanthropic events to further demonstrate our commitment to the communities across our footprint.
9. What types of employee benefits and perks does your company offer? How do these contribute to overall job satisfaction?
At HGV, our greatest strength is our people, and by providing industry-leading benefits, stellar recognition programs and abundant professional development opportunities, we strive to attract and retain top talent.
These team member benefits include: Day-1 benefits including medical, dental, vision and optional supplemental insurance for eligible full-time U.S. and Canadian team members, as well as enrolling in HGV's Retirement Savings Plan date of hire, U.S. part-time team members eligibility for benefits, employer funded HSA and HRA accounts, DailyPay for eligible U.S. team members, Go Hilton best-in-class travel program, commuter benefit, employer paid short term disability, PTO and sick leave plans including an enhanced bereavement leave increased from three to five days, employee stock ownership plan and increased discount on the Employee Stock Purchase Plan (ESPP) from 5% to 15%, educational assistance program and tuition reimbursement, FlexWork@HGV programs (team members can choose a variety of work options that best support their team and work-life balance), Perks at Work (HGV's discount program), volunteer opportunities for team members through HGV's corporate social responsibility program, HGV Serves, underscoring the importance of giving back through several of the company's non-profit partners.
10. How does your company handle feedback and suggestions from employees? Is there a system in place for employees to voice their concerns or ideas?
At HGV, we provide several opportunities for team members at all levels to have a voice and feel heard by leadership. In addition to an annual engagement survey, which in 2022 over 9,000 team members participated in, we offer shorter surveys throughout the year for team members to share feedback. The surveys give senior leadership insight on different categories including: overall engagement, specific drivers of engagement, advocacy and retention. These surveys also allow leaders to learn more about team members' thoughts, opinions and ideas as we continue to look ahead and continuously improve their experiences.
HGV also helps support team members in setting goals that helps foster career growth, while also providing an encouraging environment to provide thoughts and feedback on areas the company can improve upon.
These methods provide a purposeful connection with our team members, essentially, the lifeline that helps inform HGV of its decision-making process and learn what team members love most about HGV.
