e-Interview
In conversation with Newsweek, Holly Novak, chief people officer at Jack Henry & Associates answered the following questions**:**
1. Can you provide an overview of your company's workplace culture and values, and how they contribute to a positive work environment?
Ask our Associates "why Jack Henry?" and they'll tell you our culture is extraordinary. Our co-founders, Jack Henry and Jerry Hall, believed that business is about people and relationships keep us together. We still stand by that philosophy today and aim to put people first in all decisions we make. We have an inclusive community of talented individuals who rise together to meet challenges, improve, grow, and innovate. In addition to our guiding principles – do the right thing, do whatever it takes, and have fun – our Core Values are central to our strong culture. In our fiscal year 2023 engagement survey, which received a 65% response rate, 87% of Associates reported they believe in our values (compared to the 81% industry benchmark). Our core values are used as "true north" when designing and implementing initiatives and programs for Jack Henry, and Associates can embrace these values through the full talent life cycle. For example, our Core Values are the criteria used to determine our quarterly Dedication to Excellence Award winners. Nominees for this award demonstrate our Core Values through performance and behavior. Recognizing and celebrating the character, talent, and hard work of our Associates reinforces our commitment to our Core Values.
Our five key values are:
• Passion for Customer Service - We take care of the customers who have trusted us with their business.
•. Relationships - Our customers are not faceless organizations, and our Associates are not just numbers. Treating others as individuals leads to success.
•. Integrity - We take ownership and do the right thing, even when it's not the easiest option.
•. Drive for Results - We push ourselves to go beyond the ordinary and do whatever it takes to get the best outcome.
•. Excellence - We don't settle for "good enough." We continually strive to improve.
2. How does your company promote diversity and inclusion within the workplace? Are there any specific initiatives or programs in place?
Diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) is an integral part of our business. Our overall approach at Jack Henry is to integrate DEIB as a business imperative to create sustainable, long-term results and connections that foster a culture of belonging, well-being, and purpose. A significant avenue for Associate connection, education and innovative thought is through our Business Innovation Groups (BIGs), which are company-sponsored and Associate-led groups that create a platform for Associates to work collaboratively to address business needs. Executive sponsors provide guidance and mentorship to the BIGs leaders and champion the initiatives with their peers and across the business. We have six DEIB-focused BIGs and one focused on environmental stewardship efforts.
jhAVID: Focuses on supporting Associates with visible and invisible disabilities
Mosaic of People: Focuses on multicultural diversity and inclusion
PRISM: Focuses on supporting LGTBQIA+ community and allies
Veterans: Focuses on supporting military veterans
Women at Jack Henry: Focuses on empowering women
Go Green: Focuses on environmental stewardship
At the core of our DEIB strategy lies a culture of continuous learning. In fiscal year 2023, our entire Associate population completed the "Cultivating Cultural Competence & Inclusion" training course. By equipping ourselves with a profound understanding of diverse cultural perspectives, we actively contribute to the creation of a workplace that thrives on inclusive practices.
3. Are there any professional development and growth opportunities available to employees? How does your company support career advancement?
Jack Henry offers every Associate, at every job level, professional development opportunities to equip them with essential and technical skills. Learning avenues include enterprise-wide access to online content libraries, opportunities to learn from internal and external subject matter experts, learning challenges highlighting key organizational priorities, and virtual instructor-led training events for both individual contributors and people leaders.
One of our cornerstone learning initiatives is our three-week, enterprise-wide learning event, called JackTracks. The series features topics identified and taught by Associates at all levels of the company. In fiscal year 2023, more than 2,200 Associates participated in more than 30 unique learning sessions. Associates are empowered to take an active role in their career growth – whatever that looks like for them. Whether it's learning and development, participation in new projects, or internal job changes – up, down, or across the organization – Jack Henry wants associates to pursue the type of internal mobility that is meaningful to them.
4. What measures does your company take to support employee mental health and well-being?
According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), one in five adults in the U.S. lives with a mental health condition. Nearly everyone experiences stress in our everyday lives, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
In May, Jack Henry celebrates national Mental Health Awareness month. Over the 31 days (and beyond), we encourage Associates to learn more about mental health to help themselves and their loved ones and most importantly, to know they are not alone. We provide a calendar with daily activities, learning opportunities, and resources to help associates stay connected to their mental health. Additionally, Optum, our Employee Assistance Program administrator, facilitated two courses for associates: Maintaining Well-being Through Times of Uncertainty and Stress: Beyond the Basics.
Throughout the year, Optum offers a wide range of programs and services to help provide Associates current information and educational materials about work/life issues and develop work/life management skills.
We believe in doing our best work however it works best for us – and to achieve that, we offer flexible work schedules and arrangements. More than 75% of our workforce is fully remote.
A group of our People & Culture employees also got certified in Mental Health First Aide with our New York Life partner and plan to utilize that knowledge in helping associates work through struggles related to well being.
5. How does your company ensure transparency and open communication between management and employees, fostering a sense of trust and belonging?
Transparency, collaboration, consistency, and communication are four of our operational tenets at Jack Henry.
In our fiscal year 2023 engagement survey, 79% of Associates reported they trust Jack Henry (compared to the 68% industry benchmark) and 77% of Associates feel that Jack Henry creates an environment where they belong.
From the top level of leaders to front-line supervisors, we ensure communication is consistent and transparent among leaders by:
•. Distribute a monthly publication to all leaders with information organized in a "must know," "should know," and "nice to know" format.
•. Facilitating a monthly leader meeting, called Manager Forum, to discuss a variety of timely and relevant topics.
•. Provide talking points and prompts for leaders to continue conversations with their teams.
Our Board Chair and CEO, David Foss, facilitates bi-annual town halls in which all Associates are invited to tune into a live broadcast and ask questions. Foss also provides a quarterly Associate update video to discuss how the company is performing and provide other updates. He also is planning his "roadshows" that stopped during the pandemic this year which is a way for him to hear directly from associates at our key locations. Each Vice President hosts quarterly "All Hands" meetings with their business units to review company updates and look ahead at the upcoming quarter.
6. How does your company handle feedback and suggestions from employees? Is there a system in place for employees to voice their concerns or ideas?
Associates are the heart of Jack Henry and why we continually succeed as a well-rounded financial technology company. We never want to stop improving, which is why we are committed to continuously listening to associates. Each year on their service anniversary date, Associates are invited to share feedback about their Associate experience through an anonymous engagement survey. Insights from the fiscal year 2023 engagement survey, which had a 65% response rate, revealed Jack Henry scored well above the industry benchmark in the following areas:
Jack Henry Industry Benchmark
81% established overall engagement score 68%
78% strongly agree that Jack Henry encourages work-life balance. 66%
79% trust Jack Henry 68%
87% agree that Jack Henry has consistently treated them well 74%
87% believe in Jack Henry's Core Values 81%
We also facilitate surveys for our newly hired Associates (after 60 days of employment) to learn more about their interviewing and onboarding experience, as well as hiring managers to learn more about their experience with our Talent Acquisition team. As needed, we also facilitate "pulse" surveys for targeted groups of Associates or all Associates, depending on the topic. In the past, survey topics have gathered sentiments on our COVID-19 resources, return to office plans, workspace needs, and more.
In addition to these surveys, we collect Associate feedback through Skip-A-Level meetings, in which Associates provide insight on their experience to a leader above their direct leader's level. Associates can also work directly with their leader, business unit leader, or HR Business Partner to provide feedback and suggestions. We also have an internal suggestion form, called Start Doing Smarter Stuff, in which an Associate can anonymously submit an idea they believe would help improve consistency, communication, collaboration, or transparency across the organization. Our Associate Experience Team reviews and responds to these submissions on a weekly basis.
We also review and respond to reviews on external career sites, such as Glassdoor, Indeed, and others.
Jack Henry seeks to foster a safe, ethical, and inclusive workplace where the first and last question asked is "what's the right thing to do?" If an Associate has an ethical concern, we have a strong process in place for them to report those concerns anonymously 24 hours per day, 365 days per year.
7. Can you provide examples of employee-driven initiatives or employee resource groups that exist within your company to support specific communities or causes?
At Jack Henry, we believe in being a part of something bigger than ourselves – in being committed to doing the right thing and whatever it takes for our colleagues, clients, and community. A significant avenue for Associate connection, education and innovative thought is through our Business Innovation Groups (BIGs), which are company-sponsored and Associate-led groups that create a platform for Associates to work collaboratively to address business needs. 8. How does your company ensure a safe and inclusive work environment for all employees, free from discrimination or harassment?
Jack Henry & Associates, Inc.® was founded on three guiding principles: do the right thing, do whatever it takes, and have fun. We will conduct business fairly, impartially, in an ethical manner, and in complete compliance with the law. Our business conduct must be guided by the highest level of integrity when dealing with our Associates, customers, vendors, and local communities. We expect that Associates will not engage in any activity that could call into question the Jack Henry's honesty, impartiality, or reputation, and that they will obey all applicable laws and regulations governing our operations anywhere we conduct business.
We have established this hotline through Lighthouse Services, Inc. for the specific purpose to report fraud, unlawful, unethical, and other types of improper behavior. Regular business matters that do not require anonymity should be directed to your supervisor and should not be submitted using this service. We provide this hotline as an additional communication tool for specific types of situations because we believe it is a good business practice to do so.
Each Associate bears the responsibility to ask questions, seek proper guidance, and report suspected violations of our Code of Conduct. We will not tolerate any retaliation against Associates who raise genuine concerns. Such retaliation is cause for disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment.
9. How does your company celebrate and recognize employee achievements and milestones?
Recognizing Associates is an important part of our culture at Jack Henry. We have several recognition programs, including:
• Dedication to Excellence/Associates' Choice Awards: Associates can nominate their peers for going above and beyond in demonstrating our Core Values through performance and behavior. Each quarter, four winners are selected by a rotating panel of Associates that volunteer to serve on the award committee. Each winner receives a cash award and personal plaque. At the end of each fiscal year, the 16 Dedication to Excellence Award winners become eligible for an award which recognizes the best of the best – the Associates' Choice Awards. This award allows all Associates to select the peers they feel best represent Jack Henry's Core Values. Associates' Choice Award winners receive a cash prize and trophy as well as company-wide recognition.
• RISE (Relationships, Integrity, Service, Excellence): This recognition program allows Associates to recognize their peers that have done something to display our Core Values. Using a nomination form, Associates are able to give a real-time "shout out" and help recognize and celebrate their peers in their daily work.
• Years of Service: Jack Henry's Years of Service program provides the opportunity to celebrate an Associates' accomplishments and dedication to the company. It celebrates Associate anniversaries at one year and every five years thereafter (five, 10, 15, 20 years of service, etc.). One-year anniversaries are celebrated with a personalized card and Jack Henry company store gift certificate. Anniversaries of five years and beyond are recognized with a customized yearbook, in which peers can comment and share memories, a numeral plaque, anniversary gift and Jack Henry company store gift certificate.
In addition to these company-wide programs, many of our departments and teams have their own recognition programs in place. Leaders at all levels are encouraged to include regular kudos and recognition during meetings.
