e-Interview

In conversations with Newsweek, Brad Bergmooser, President & CEO answered the following questions:

1. How does the history of your institution inform its present-day policies?

We were founded in 1952 as Chevy-Flint Federal Credit Union by the employees of the Chevrolet Motor Company (a factory fondly known as "Chevy in the Hole." The plant was located in a low area, ("the hole") along the banks of the Flint River near downtown Flint, Michigan. Because our founding institution was the auto industry, an industry that has evolved and overcome so much in its time, we lead the way in approaching banking differently.

Our industry is consolidating, and because we are owned by our members (those that bank with us) our success as a company is based on their success. This is why becoming their financial partner and educating them on how to make sound financial decisions is so important. We're proud of where we're from and are thankful for the 82,000+ members who own and continually trust Financial Plus as their place to bank.

2. How would you describe your company's contribution and commitment to its community?

Our investment in the community helps create opportunities for those who need it most. In 2023 Financial Plus donated a record-breaking $28,000 to the United Ways of Genesee, Saginaw, and Bay Counties from an employee contribution campaign. We rolled up our sleeves for One Week One Street, a neighborhood revitalization project that improves the quality of life for its residents. With DEI at the forefront, we launched our Billboards of Inclusion contest that awarded two minority-owned businesses with a free billboard advertisement designed and financed by Financial Plus. Annually, we contribute over 800 hours of our time to support local organizations and fundraisers, and we take pride in our mission to empower our neighbors to thrive.

Financial Plus is committed to adopting solutions tailored to individual lifestyles. We have made Certified Financial Coaching available at all branch locations, with over 40 Certified Financial Coaches to date. Our investments in technology allow individuals to perform most transactions digitally when they want and where they want. We know each face-to-face conversation we have is much more important than it was 10 years ago, and as a result we are in the process of remodeling all of our branch locations to have in-person tellers. At Financial Plus we are constantly finding ways to help our members and communities flourish.

3. What key benefits and permanent features does your company offer to customers?

We provide the tools and knowledge to help consumers reach their goals and make day-to-day banking decisions easier and more straightforward. That's why our First-Time Homebuyer program has dedicated experts to guide you every step of the way and offer qualified members cash off their closing costs. With the implementation of our First Time Auto Buyer Program, we have made the dream of purchasing a car a reality for many members. At Financial Plus we also have free Certified Financial Coaching available at all of our branches, offering personalized guidance tailored to individual needs. We engage with the community through educational presentations at local schools, employers, and churches. And we even offer multiple scholarship opportunities, reinforcing Financial Plus's dedication to our community's success and financial well-being. Our commitment to education extends online, where we provide free educational resources including live webinars, worksheets, student loan resources, and more to encourage continuous learning. Moreover, through our mobile banking app, members can access their credit scores, detailed reports, and score simulation scenarios for free, aiding in informed financial decision-making.
