America's Greatest Workplaces E-Interview In conversations with Newsweek, David L. Reed, Global Head, Talent Acquisition at Sedgwick, answered the following questions:

What specific strategies or initiatives do you believe have contributed most to creating a positive workplace environment at your company?

The work we do is meaningful and makes a difference in the world. In delivering caring that counts, we offer our 33,000 colleagues worldwide a healthy and supportive work environment built on well-being, connectedness and growth. We’re also committed to supporting the communities where we live and work. We aspire to lead our industry in acting with purpose and social consciousness and to promote sustainable practices, so our planet and all of us on it can thrive long into the future. Caring that counts is at the heart of who we are, and that includes taking care of our colleagues, clients and the communities where we live and work.

At the core we focus on:

Empathy - The work we do is meaningful
Growth - What happens next is up to us
Accountability - Being all in is the only way to be
Inclusion - Good ideas come from everywhere
Collaboration - Teamwork makes the dream bigger

Our total rewards package for colleagues supports four key areas of well-being — mental, physical, financial and professional — and includes compensation, paid time off (PTO), health benefits, retirement planning and more.

Each year, we reevaluate our benefit offerings to ensure colleagues and their families have the right resources for their total well-being. Some of the latest additions to our U.S. colleague benefits include a cost-transparency medical plan, LGBTQ+ virtual provider network and advocacy team, virtual physical therapy options, enhanced paid parental leave for baby bonding and a whole-person gastrointestinal care program. We continue to prioritize colleagues’ mental well-being, providing a variety of mental health offerings that address the needs of our workforce and in ways that work best for them.

Another expression of our commitment to colleague well-being is the Sedgwick Family Fund, which provides assistance grants to qualifying colleagues experiencing a personal hardship, such as a devastating illness or natural disaster. The fund is fueled by a combination of company donations and colleague contributions, giving colleagues the opportunity to make a meaningful difference and support one another through difficult times. 2024 was a busy year for fund applications, mainly due to the intense hurricanes that hit the U.S. in October and November. Since the Sedgwick Family Fund launched in 2022, we’ve awarded over $1 million in assistance grants to nearly 600 colleagues. Of the recipients who elected to share their outcomes with us, more than 88% say the grant they received from us played a significant part in regaining their financial stability.

In everything we do, we provide caring that counts. It’s what we’re known for. Getting people back to wellness, reviving communities and helping organizations succeed requires a deep well of humanity. It’s the kind of caring that is, and always will be, at the very heart of who we are.

How do you balance the needs of a growing business with maintaining the strong workplace culture that helped you achieve this recognition?

We strive every day to provide a world-class colleague experience that demonstrates how much we value the unique contributions of our dedicated people. Our colleague experience is one of the company’s top priorities, and we’re specifically focused on the areas of well-being, connectedness and growth.

For decades, we’ve made a meaningful difference around the world through our sustainability efforts, culture of caring and commitment to doing the right thing. We focus on areas of key importance to our business and where we can have the most significant impact.  We’re proud to build on this great work and to identify additional opportunities for growth — all with a heightened understanding of our role and responsibility as a business leader. As we evolve, we continue to adapt our global strategy and the actions we take to work toward our vision.

Can you speak to the role leadership plays in fostering employee satisfaction and long-term success at your company?

Acknowledging and rewarding good work
We want our colleagues to feel recognized and appreciated — by their peers, leaders and the entire company. 2024 marked the second year of our Props global rewards and recognition program. With our interactive online platform, colleagues can give and receive recognition, as well as redeem rewards for a variety of digital gift cards, physical merchandise and charitable donations. Colleagues at all levels can celebrate career milestones and recognize actions — big or small — that contribute to a job well done. The program was designed based on requests for more opportunities to recognize others and be recognized. Props’ virtual platform also offers meaningful and sustainable ways to share and celebrate colleague accomplishments, rather than having to rely on in-person events.

Listening
Regular colleague feedback is important to us, as hearing directly from our colleagues helps us build on our strengths and identify opportunities for improvement. We check in with our colleagues using short “pulse” surveys throughout the year and evaluate feedback across the colleague life cycle so we can consider enhancements to the holistic colleague experience. Our newly hired colleagues continue to be highly engaged, with an average engagement score of 91% for their first year

How do you approach career development and growth opportunities for your employees to ensure they thrive within the organization?

Ongoing learning and development are important to our colleagues and to our organization. We’re committed to helping colleagues grow personally and professionally, so they can realize new possibilities and perform at their best. In 2024, we expanded the offerings of Sedgwick University, our in-house training and development arm. In addition to providing tuition reimbursement, professional certifications and over 10,000 online resources like courses, videos and audiobooks, we now offer a Leadership Academy for current and aspiring leaders. As a result of our support for internal career mobility, more than 2,000 colleagues took advantage of new opportunities and transitioned to different/promoted roles in 2024 — contributing to high colleague engagement and improved retention.

We also celebrated companywide growth during out annual Growth Week (which was expanded to two weeks to allow for greater flexibility and participation). To give colleagues fun and exciting opportunities to learn, develop, innovate, and get inspired, we hosted 50 live sessions featuring guest speakers and organizational leaders from around the world. During Growth Week 2024, we saw a total of 15,000 course views — a 23% increase in colleague participation and a 32% increase in live program attendance over the prior year.

What advice would you give other companies looking to improve their workplace culture and create a similar environment of employee satisfaction and growth?

If you are looking to improve your workplace culture and create an environment where colleague satisfaction and growth truly thrive, your blueprint should start with a genuine commitment to people and purpose with a focus on well-being, recognition, growth, listening, and leadership — flow naturally and remain the core pillars.
